Quitting Boy Scouts, Being a White Belt, Lentil Soup
I enjoyed Cub Scouts and Webelos. Boy Scouts? Not so much. Ever wonder what BJJ white belts have to endure? The perfect fall lentil soup recipe is just one click away.
I’ve got another entertaining story for you this week; this one about the day I decided to quit Boy Scouts. I’m still not sure I was ever officially a Boy Scout, so maybe I didn’t quit at all. But I’ll tell you this: quitting something never felt so good.
On a different note, I recently put together a complete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu syllabus and curriculum, with some instructor notes included. If you’ve ever wondered what a white belt needs to master before moving on to blue, this is your chance to find out.
And finally, I’m sharing a recipe for the perfect lentil soup. It’s simple, delicious, and surprisingly photogenic. Take a look.

The Day I Quit Boy Scouts
Perhaps some things just aren’t meant to last forever; Cub Scouts and Webelos being two of them. I was perfectly content until the day they tried to promote me. One glance at what I was about to become was enough to turn me off completely. Maybe Boy Scouts would have been fun, maybe not. I’ll never know. I just know I could have logged a few more weekends at Camp Siwanoy. Ah, what could have been.
Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a White Belt
Looking back, it’s tough to remember exactly what I went through as a white belt. After so many hours on the mats, that stage feels like a blur. What I do recall, though, is the excitement, the challenge, and the rush of joining my first club. I’d always enjoyed wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu felt like a natural extension of that. If you’re considering stepping onto the mats yourself, or if you’re simply curious about what a beginner might face, take a look at my sample curriculum.
Perfect Lentil & Kale Soup Recipe
It doesn’t take much to put together a perfect pot of lentil and kale soup. A few carrots, some kale, lentils, onions, garlic, tomatoes, and the right spices, and you’re set. The best part? Once it’s ready, you’ve got a week’s worth of hearty, healthy meals at a fraction of the cost of eating out. And with lentils and kale in the mix, you’re getting what many would call “super foods.” The fact that it tastes great is just a bonus. Give it a try.
