The Hermitage, August in Maine, Sentences, Satan Caves, Butternut Squash Soup
Let's check out a secret spot in Scotland and another in New York. I also discuss some annoying sentences, the nearly dreadful month of August in Maine, and an awesome soup recipe.
Don’t let my post about the weather during August here in Maine scare you. It really is so much better than July’s sticky humidity. Sure, we’ll see some temps in the 90s next week, but it’ll hopefully be a blip and we can get back to some beautifully cool nights.
For today’s roundup, I share what I believe to be some interesting places, thoughts, and ideas. I offer a peek into The Hermitage in Scotland (a place most visitors would describe as the most strikingly beautiful anywhere), a report on our local weather, a quasi-rant about a paragraph structure that seems to be creeping its way into society, a VERY deep dive into the Satan Caves in Brewster, New York, and a recipe for quite possibly the best-tasting butternut squash soup you’ve ever eaten.

The Hermitage
This is the consensus of The Hermitage: “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever walked.” What is this place? The Hermitage is a National Trust for Scotland. It's a protected site that's located near Dunkeld, Perth, and Kinross. It sits on the banks of the River Braan in Craigvinean Forest and it is certainly magical. Obviously, this intro is just a teaser. If you’d like to learn more, click through to read my entire post.
What’s Maine Like in August?
Our weather is definitely getting more comfortable, but we’re expecting another heat wave next week. I’m hopeful that it’ll pass quickly so we can get back to the cooler nights we’ve been experiencing toward the early portion of the month.
Enough With the Single-Sentence Paragraphs
Apparently, tech people and nerds have developed a new paragraph structure that’s taking the internet by storm. Unfortunately, it’s a structure that’s finding its way under my skin. What is it? It’s the one-to-two-sentence paragraph. Yes, you read that right. It’s an entire blog post or article that’s jam-packed with one-sentence paragraphs. To see what these things look like, check out my post. You’ll understand exactly what’s bothering me.
The Satan Caves
When I was a kid, my friends and I visited a place in Brewster, New York that was referred to as "The Satan Caves." For people who lived in the area, the caves were legendary and only the brave ventured inside of them. Years after our first exploration, I brought Laura for a visit, only to find the entrance nearly completely blocked off. It wasn’t like we were going to go inside anyway - I merely wanted to show her what I’ve been telling her about for years. The post I’m sharing here is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive description of the Satan Caves across the entirety of the planet. If you’re a caver, you won’t want to miss it.
Slow Cooker Butternut Squash Soup Recipe
There’s no shortage of butternut squash soup recipes on the internet these days, but since the harvest and soup season are right around the corner, I thought I’d present one of my favorites. While you can certainly bake or boil the butternut squash for any variation of this type of soup, the slow cooker method adds a little something extra. With autumn so close by, be sure to pick up some squash and use this recipe to prepare a dish you’ll remember.
