The Weekly Roundup 09/25/25
This week, I’ll be sharing posts on Maine’s prolonged drought, strategies for active reading, and what September weather in Maine typically looks like.
As I sit here typing, rain is falling outside, but according to the weather folks, it won’t make much of a difference. This quick storm has become the talk of our part of the state, especially since half the people I know have had their wells run dry. And yet, the weatherman calls the rainfall “cosmetic.” The audacity! Apparently, more than an inch and a half will fall, but to overcome the drought we’d need at least a foot. Droughts are fascinating, and I recently dove into the topic in one of the posts I’ll share below.
I also wrote about active reading and how I’ve been failing at it lately. If you’re a fellow reader, I think you’ll recognize exactly what I mean in that piece.
And finally, September in Maine is beautiful, in its own unpredictable way. In my last post, I lay out the highs and lows of the season. Links to all three posts are below. Enjoy!

This Maine Drought Rages On
Maine is experiencing its sixth driest season on record. New Hampshire is faring even worse. It’s their driest ever since rainfall tracking began. I keep asking myself why it’s been so dry. The summer started with nothing but rain, and I assumed that pattern would continue. But once the skies cleared, our stream dried up, the pond level dropped, and even our well water began to vanish.
As I mentioned earlier, it’s raining while I write this, so at least there’s that. And now that the season has shifted, I have a feeling in my bones that our dry spell may finally be coming to an end.
The Active Reader
I’ve always had a complicated relationship with reading. I haven’t quite found my niche, and it’s begun to take a toll on my well-being. This indecision might even spill over into my blogging. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve yet to limit myself to one topic. I write about anything and everything, which may or may not be the best approach.
I envy those book reviewers on YouTube who seem to have it all figured out. They read two books a week and manage to post thoughtful reviews of each. Meanwhile, it would take me six months to finish just one of their books. Their speed, and the ease with which they handle it, can be irritating. But so be it. At least I’m aware of my limitations and am actively working on them. I explain more in this post.
What’s Maine Like in September?
Ah, September, one of my favorite months. Since moving to Maine, it’s taken on even more meaning. For some reason, I don’t recall sweating through humid summers or battling swarms of bugs while growing up in New York. Maine summers, though, can be brutal. Thankfully, this past one is behind us.
So far, September has been sublime: cooler days in the 70s and crisp nights dipping into the 40s. Perfect weather for long walks by day and restful sleep by night. Honestly, I couldn’t ask for more.
