Deer Flies, Challenges with BJJ, Summer Weather in Maine
Deer flies are one of the worst things earth has to offer. That, plus some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu opinion as well a discussion on Maine's summer weather.
I’ve been doing a lot of blogging lately and thought my subscribers would enjoy reading some of what I’ve written. In this cluster of posts, I discuss the dreaded deer fly that plagues Maine (and all of northern New England, for that matter), getting burned out from a whole lot of years of practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, some of the challenges BJJ practitioners face, and what the summer is like up here in Maine during the months of June and July.

The Abominable Deer Fly
If you’ve ever gone camping in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont during the month of July, you’ve surely dealt with this scourge of the earth. The deer fly is one of the worst and most hated insects on the planet and in this post, I tell you what I really think of them. And then I tell you how I win against them.
BJJ Burnout
Becoming burned out by pretty much anything is a very real condition. While I was in college, I became burned out. In situations like that one, I believe most people refer to the burnout as senioritis. Whatever the case, during my senior year, I simply didn’t care about my success at the university like I once had. I didn’t care much about anything. I’m afraid the same is occurring with my practicing of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Ugh. I hated writing this post.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Difficult to Learn?
I’m sure you can find the answer to whether or not BJJ is hard to learn anywhere on the internet, but I’m fairly confident you won’t find an answer like the one I give. What’s the answer? It has not so much to do with the skills or body style necessary to succeed and a ton to do with what type of personality a person has. Most people think it primarily has to do with whether or not a person can become skilled enough to pull off the techniques. I suggest that it much more depends on whether or not a person really wants to.
What’s Maine Like in July?
Back when I launched my jaygaulard.me blog in November of 2024, I decided to record my thoughts on what each month here in Maine is like. Surprisingly, I stuck with my efforts and I’m almost finished with each month of the year. July is my latest installment, so if you have any interest in what the weather and conditions are like in my neck of the woods, you can read about it here.
What’s Maine Like in June?
The same as above, except this time, I discuss what the month of June is like in Maine.
